LEARNING MEMOIR(15 POINTS)
Your essay should be double-spaced and 3-4 pages long (900-1,200 words). External sources are not required, but you are welcome to use them as long as you use MLA in-text citations and add a Works Cited page. The Purdue OWL is an excellent, free MLA guide.
Your paper will center around one experience and how it has influenced your learning over time. Here are some examples of possibilities: a teacher who was inspiring to you, a text (book, film, song, TV show, etc.) that helped you see learning in a new way, a class that changed your notions of learning, a relative/friend/tutor who worked with you to improve your learning, an extra-curricular activity that transformed the way you learn, a trip you took (national or international) where you began to see the world and how you learn differently. If none of these options work for you, I’m happy to hear other ideas.
Once you have your topic, you will write an essay where you answer the following questions:
1. How did this text/person/experience come into your life?
2. How did this text/person/experience influence the way you learned at the time?
3. Has the way in which this text/person/experience influences your learning changed for you over time? If so, how?
As you can see, the focus of this essay is the relationship between your learning style and this particular text/person/experience. Make sure that you keep both those topics running through your whole essay or you will end up with a project that doesn't fulfill the assignment requirements. In other words, don’t tell us about all the castles you visited during your study abroad in France unless you can tie those visits to new ways of gathering, processing, and communicating information that you developed during those visits.
