DISCIPLINARY LITERACIES PRESENTATION (18 points)
You will do an 8-10 minute presentation where you:
1. Select three peer-reviewed articles from your field of study. If you do not have a major yet, select a field you are curious about. You should find the articles through our library databases (you can find them by going here and clicking on the third tab, which says Databases). You are welcome to either select at three articles around a topic that interests you within your field or to explore different topics.
2. As you read the articles, think about the way in which arguments are made in your field. For this assignment, we’re more concerned with how the authors are saying what they’re saying rather than with what they’re saying. In other words, more than content, we’re concerned with form.
3. You will create a presentation where you answer the following questions about the three articles you select: Does the scholarship tend to be written by one person or by groups? What tone do the authors use? How do they establish their credibility? What kinds of questions are they seeking to answer and what kind of evidence are they providing to make their points? Is there a particular format that they seem to follow in making their points? Make sure to cite the three articles you selected at the beginning of your presentation and to use excerpts from them to back up the points you’re making.
4. Your presentation should be either a Powerpoint or a Prezi and it must stay within the time limit. I will time you and if you go over ten minutes, I will stop you wherever you are at that point. One of the key things to learn through a presentation is to say what you need to say in the allotted time, so make sure as you rehearse that you time yourself and stick to the time limit.
5. Although I realize that some people find public speaking intimidating and some are better public speakers than others, I want you to make an effort to make eye contact with the audience as you speak. Eye contact helps your audience feel engaged and it helps you get a sense of how they are reacting to your presentation.
6. I expect you to dress up for this presentation as you would for a job interview. Being dressed up will make you feel and look more professional as you deliver your presentation.
7. The focus of this presentation is how your particular field makes its scholarly arguments. Make sure that you focus the argumentative strategies utilized by the articles you read.
